Ceramic vs. Porcelain Tiles: Understanding the Differences

Has the time come to change the flooring or backsplash in your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room? If you are thinking about getting tile, the first question anyone will ask you will be, “What kind?”

“I don’t know,” is the common answer, and that’s totally fine. That’s why this article is here – to discuss the differences of two of the most common floor tiles.

Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are primarily made from clay that is fired and hardened in a kiln of 1,800°F and 2,000°F. Their main decorative application is flooring, walls, and countertops.

Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain tiles are a type of ceramic tile that are made with fine clay mixed with sand and feldspar. They are fired in a high-temperature kiln (up to 2,300°F), which makes them denser and less absorbent than standard ceramic tiles.

A Comparison of Benefits

Both ceramic and porcelain tiles are heat resistant, but because of their higher density, porcelain tiles are preferred for more humid areas like bathrooms. Their low water absorption rate also make porcelain tiles a good choice for kitchens and outdoors as well.

Both porcelain and ceramic tiles are versatile and come in a wide range of colours, sizes, and designs; however, ceramic tiles tend to have a greater selection, which allows for greater design customization.

Ceramic and porcelain tiles can both be glazed for aesthetic appeal, to enhance their protection against moisture, and to facilitate cleaning. Unglazed tiles for both porcelain and ceramic tiles offer a more natural look and better slip resistance.

Ceramic tiles have an affordable price point, while porcelain tiles are more durable against wear and tear, chipping, and cracking

The Drawbacks of Each

Since they are thinner and less water-resistant than porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles are not as resistant to heavy impacts, and they are not recommended for outdoor use in places like Ottawa, where there are extremes in weather conditions. Ceramic tiles may also require sealing and maintenance to prevent staining and water absorption. Nonetheless, they are still a beautiful and frequent choice for floors and walls.

As for porcelain tiles, while their more complex manufacturing process makes them more resistant, it also makes them less affordable for budget-conscious decorators. Porcelain tiles are also more challenging to cut, which can make DIY installation more difficult and professional installation more expensive. Even so, porcelain tiles are commonly used throughout Ontario.
